Stem Cell Therapy
Below are our Pre- and Post-Procedure Stem Cell Harvesting and Deployment instructions. Please be sure to follow all instructions as indicated. In addition, please be sure to report any dental work, infections, and/or surgery at least two (2) weeks prior to your procedure. Please feel free to contact our office for any additional information at (586) 992-8300.
As a precaution, absolutely no blood thinners, aspirin or aspirin products should be taken for seven (7) days prior to your stem cell treatment procedure. As an aid, the following list of products all contain aspirin or blood thinning properties:
- ALL brands of aspirin
- Alka Seltzer
Please be sure to contact a pharmacist if you are unsure about medication you are currently taking.
Day of the Procedure:
On the day of your actual stem cell deployment, take a shower and be sure to wash your entire body thoroughly. Wear baggy, loose pants (such as sweat pants) and a comfortable top. Fortunately, there are no dietary restrictions before or after your stem cell procedure; however, you should avoid consuming ANY alcohol for 8 hours prior to your appointment and we recommend you enjoy a light meal rather than a heavy one before the procedure.
During the Procedure:
We perform a “mini” liposuction procedure to harvest stem cells, which is done in our surgical facility using just and local anesthetic. You will be asked to lie on the exam table and a small area of your abdomen will be exposed. After using Iodine soap to clean the harvesting site and placing sterile drapes over you to help prevent infection, you will be given injections of anesthetic into the skin to help reduce any discomfort. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the doctor will make a small puncture and remove some fat with a suction device. During this procedure you may feel a pulling sensation. Overall, this procedure takes approx. 20 minutes, and the puncture will heal naturally without stitches.
Following the Procedure:
After your procedure, DO NOT engage in any athletics, strenuous activity or heavy lifting of any kind for a period of at least seven days. During this time, your post-stem cell treatment period should be marked by modified general physical activity for a period of 48 hours. Your doctor may provide you with additional instructions for specific activities depending on the type of stem cell deployment you had.
In addition to modified physical activity, strictly avoid any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for TWO (2) full weeks following your stem cell injections. (i.e. Advil, Motrin, Naprosyn, etc).
Some other things to consider are:
- A slight amount of bruising and swelling is expected.
- You must have someone available to drive you home from the procedure.
- Place an ice pack on your liposuction harvest site if there is any discomfort.
- While any discomfort you feel should be very mild.I If you need it, an over-the-counter pain reliever may help.
You may shower (no baths) as early as the next day. We recommend you wear a compression binder overnight. You may want to re-apply this binder for up to one (1) week as it will maintain compression on the wound and may provide you with additional comfort. This is not required, so you may leave it off if you find it very uncomfortable.
