Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty (or nose job) is a reshaping of the nose. This can be done to improve the appearance of the nose or to help with breathing problems. Some people are unhappy with the shape of the nose they were born with, while others may desire a rhinoplasty to improved changes caused by injury or aging. It often includes the removal of a hump, straightening of the nose, changes in the size and shape of the tip, and strengthening support structures of the nose. Patients who have had the procedure often say that rhinoplasty greatly improved their facial appearance and their self-confidence.

Are There Different Ways To Perform A Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is always a surgical procedure. It can be done with an “open approach” or a “closed approach”. The open approach involves a small incision underneath the nose to expose the underlying structures. A closed approach consists of incisions hidden inside the nose. Dr. Kotlus will help you determine which method is best for you.

What Can I Expect After The Procedure?

A flexible splint is placed on the outside of the nose for one week. There will be some swelling initially, which will improve. Occasionally, minor bruising may occur. Soreness is expected after rhinoplasty, and mild pain medication may be prescribed for your comfort. The appearance of the nose will continuously improve for several months after the surgery as the healing process takes place.

Will My Nose Look Pinched Or Too Small?

The best cosmetic procedures are those that look natural, without the “operated-on” look. Dr. Kotlus will talk with you about your goals and expectations. Most importantly, your nose must be able to effectively function in breathing. Another crucial consideration is that your nose must appropriately match the rest of your face. Dr. Kotlus can perform a digital surgery simulation to demonstrate potential surgical outcomes.

Is Anything Else Done At The Same Time As Rhinoplasty?

Sometimes septoplasty is performed at the same time as rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum. Dr. Kotlus will assess the structure of your entire face during your presurgical evaluation. Often eyelid surgery, chin augmentation, and/or other facial enhancements will be suggested.
