What is cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a specialized field of medicine that aims to enhance the appearance and improve beauty through various elective procedures. This differs from plastic surgery, which traditionally corrects facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease.

Who is qualified to perform cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgeons come from various backgrounds such as head and neck surgery, dermatology and plastic surgery. Just as a cardiologist or gastroenterologist learns specialty skills through fellowship training after completing a residency in internal medicine, cosmetic surgeons may undergo cosmetic fellowship training after residency. There are several such fellowships available, via the American Society of Cosmetic Surgery, to surgeons who choose to undergo specialty training in cosmetic procedures.

What questions should I ask of my cosmetic surgeon?

• Ask them if they have had accredited training in cosmetic procedures and if they completed a fellowship after residency.
• Ask them how many procedures they have performed and if you may speak with a patient who has previously undergone the procedure and has given permission to speak with you.
• Ask to see before and after photos of that doctors actual patients.
• Ask if they are actively involved in research and teaching related to cosmetic surgery.
• Ask if they are certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS).
