Bikini Lines and Razors – Your Burning Questions Answered

Finally, bikini season is officially in full swing. This time of year, I’m often asked how to stay free of the appearance of unsightly, uncomfortable and pesky razor burn in the sensitive bikini line area. So, just for you ladies, I’ve listed below tips that will have you looking amazingly smooth whether you’re at the beach or lounging poolside.

Tips for ShavingStep 1: Prep. Start by exfoliating the skin with a mild glycolic acid or salicylic acid wash. Apply the wash with or without a loofah in the shower to help prep your skin. This step is going to help slough away dead skin cells and release trapped hair follicles.

Step 2: Lather up. Always use a shaving cream made for sensitive skin. Wet the skin and let the cream soak in for three minutes or so. (For legs, try using hair conditioner instead – you’ll get an extra smooth feel!)

Step 3: Time to shave! Use a sharp razor and rinse the blades in between strokes to allow for more even cutting. While you are shaving, shave in the direction of hair growth. Razor bumps happen when strands of hair curl back on themselves, grow into the skin and cause inflammation.

After following this process, if you notice razor bumps, rinse the area with cool water and apply a mild astringent (I prefer witch hazel). Skip the aftershaves and fragranced toners; they are just going to worsen the irritation.

If your rash is severe, try applying an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. If it’s persistent for more than two weeks, it’s time to see a dermatologist for a prescription-grade treatment plan. (Chances are I can see you today.  Give us a call at 586-992-9300 to find out for sure, or click here to book online).

If all else fails, you’re probably a good candidate for laser hair removal, which will permanently reduce unwanted hair on your bikini line – or many other areas of the body.
